Every Moonbear book is a delight – look for them in your library today. Did he really put out the skyfire with his bucket of water? Did he really give the moon a lovely hat for his birthday? As as added bonus I am even lucky enough to own a little Moonbear toy and when he emerges from my library bag there is usually quite a squeal of delight!įrank Asch has a fun web site and there are quite a few videos on the internet of his lovely books. Did he really visit the moon to eat moon cake? Of course not the children all shout. I think the special appeal of these books comes from the simple device that the young reader is way smarter than our little bear hero. It might be a rainbow in Skyfire, the position of the moon in Moon Game, a tree through the seasons in Happy Birthday Moon or a tadpole in Moonbear’s Pet. In these pictures we see something changing. At first glance these books seem so simple and yet each has a layer of science which the children a this age love to identify.Īsch sets up the science message with four small squares at the beginning of each book. I hope you enjoy reading about bears as much as I like writing about them.Our Kindergarten classes have spent the last three or four weeks exploring the world of Frank Asch and his little character Moonbear.

Below I’ve pictured the latest covers out there. Over the years the covers of these books have been changed slightly with new editions, reissues or paperback versions. You may see other covers with similar titles. And then there is Just Like Daddy and Goodbye House which stand on their own as well. Frank Asch (19462022) was a graduate of Cooper Union, and wrote and illustrated more than eighty children’s books, among them the bestselling classics featuring Moonbear and Baby Bear, Russian National Bestseller Award recipient Here Comes the Cat, and Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Golden Award winner Like a Windy Day. More confusing, there is a story not related to either of these series called Goodnight, Baby Bear which is about another bear entirely. I call this series of books Baby Bear Books. They wear clothes and are part of a family. But the bears I write about in Popcorn and Sandcake are different. The amazing little fuzzy Mood Bears have arrived and featured on Dragons Den Each wearing their very own internationally recognised mood and we hope that. Moon Bear soon became Moonbear in Happy Birthday, Moon, and the full color Moonbear series was born. Since then I’ve made lots of books about lots of different bears. I’ve been writing books about bears since 1978 when I published my first book about a bear called Moon Bear, in black and white mostly , about a bear who loved the moon (see Vintage Books).
